Luke stood outside of his friend David's apartment holding his gift in his hand. It was David's birthday and Luke wanted to surprise him with a personally delivered present, especially because none of his family lived in state and he didn't want his friend to be lonely on his special day.
Luke looked down at the gift in his hands, it was wrapped in light blue wrapping paper and was held together with some red ribbon. Admittedly Luke had no idea what was even in the box. David was a man of strange and varied tastes so Like struggled to find something of value for his friend. That was until he found a small curio shop in the downtown area and the old lady running it helped him pick out a gift. Well… more like handed him a gift and gave him instructions. When he asked her for advice she said she had just the thing and grabbed the box he was currently holding to him and gave explicit instructions to be there when his friend opened the gift.
The door suddenly swung open with a hectic David standing in the doorway. “Sorry about that! Didn't expect any guests today.” He stepped to the side to let Luke in then closed the door behind them.
Luke had been over to David's place quite a few times before but he could never quite get used to how he had his apartment set up. I have no idea what this could be…” He grabbed the two ends of the ribbon and swiftly tugged them, causing the ribbon to neatly fall free from the box before tearing through the wrapping paper to get to what was inside. Once enough of the wrapping paper was free from the box's lid he placed it onto his lap and opened the present. “I wonder what it could possibly-” David stopped talking as a look of confusion took hold of his face. “There's a note…” He reached inside, pulled out a small strip of paper, and read “Happy Birthday David! May your special day bring your deepest desires to fruition.” He placed the note down next to him and peered into the box one more time. “Did you forget to put the gift in there? I got the note but-”
“What?” Luke interjected. “Let me see!” He grabbed the opened box from off of David's lap and peered inside. “That can't be right, there should be-” As he looked into the box a sudden POOF of glittery smoke hit him square in the face. “AUCKH- KAKH KAKH- What the hell?!” Luke coughed and sputtered as he blindly swiped his hands through the air to get the smoke out of his face.
