There was a sudden flurry of light and sound as I was pulled from my coolant bath, the sensation of air across my bare skin as foreign as a warm bed. My cybernetic eyes struggled to adjust as I was loaded onto a gurney of some kind, several mysterious figures quickly moving to operate on the cybernetics in my back. I tried to speak, but it had been so long since I last used my voice that all I could initially manage was a raspy exhale. My eyes regained their focus, and in the darkness of my “chamber” I watched the mysterious figures work on me. They had an alien appearance, with white hair and translucent black bodies that bones could be clearly seen through. Their faces matched the same pearlescent white as their hair, though resembled that of human beings. Before I could process any of my thoughts further, one of them attached some kind of device to my back, causing me to gasp out in shock as something flooded my body, cooling me down instantly.
“According to the readings, it appears the installation of the cooling unit has been a complete success, ma’am. We can transport her now.” One of the alien figures spoke in perfect English, but with a somewhat electronic “tone” to it. One of the figures, a woman from the looks of her, leaned in closer to me, putting a warm hand along my cold cheek as she looked me in the eyes, her expression somewhere between utter fascination and profound sorrow as she smiled softly.
“At last, we have finally found you, Grand Mother.” The “woman” spoke, running one of her hands through my wet, gray hair. “Have no fear, we are not aliens, nor are we here to harm you. We are your grandchildren, revered Grand Mother.”
Rather than try again to speak, I instead deeply breathed the cold air around me, allowing myself to relax and close my eyes. An immense sense of stress and confusion overtook me as another one of the “grandchildren” put a blanket over me, finally taking me out of that dark chamber I had spent only-God-knows how long inside, submerged, abandoned, forgotten, for so many years. I knew my son was likely long gone, and I began to weep as I finally saw sunlight once again.
My “grandchildren” took me to some kind of hospital, though it didn’t look like any kind I had ever seen before. Much like the bodies of my “grandchildren”, it was sleek, sharp, and bright in design, with little flying robots drifting around attending to the needs of other “grandchildren.” Though there seemed to be a vast majority of women here, there were some others with features more closely resembling men as well. Those who noticed me being floated in looked at me with expressions ranging from shock, surprise, and some even held their hands together, as if they had begun praying. The “grandchildren” led me to a room with an incredible view of a city, something that looked straight out of some science fiction show. There was also another woman there, though she looked more like a human than all the others as she smiled at me. Though she appeared human, the subtle glow to her eyes betrayed the fact that she too wasn’t entirely normal.
“My goodness, it is so good to finally meet you~!” She greeted in a cheery voice as my “gurney” shifted and molded itself into some kind of bed before my eyes, elevating me slightly as one of the other ones produced a glass of water for me to drink. I took small sips, allowing my throat to move again. “Grand Mother, I know you have many questions. I’m sure this must come as a shock, but the world has changed quite a lot since the last time you stood on your own two feet.”
“Who… are you people?” I spoke slowly and deliberately, using muscles that had barely been maintained. “The last thing I remember is my bastard husband’s face, and then… nothing. Darkness… like a nightmare there was no waking from.”
“Well, my name is MegaMom X. I am part of the third generation of humanity to be birthed from the hardships you suffered, making me your great-great granddaughter.” She answered, her cheery tone becoming somewhat more tempered as she sat down on the edge of the bed next to me. “You must understand, Grand Mother… the nanite-saturated fluid in your body, it allowed humanity to create the first generations of MegaMoms. It was the catalyst in the next stage of human evolution, eventually overcoming the fertility plague. With this next stage of human evolution came the end of war, strife, poverty, and suffering. There’s part of you in every single human now, even these youngin’s here are your descendants. Thanks to the powerful gift you bestowed upon us, we eventually evolved to the point where humanity can reproduce asexually, and we can choose who and what we want to be from the moment we’re born. We live in a utopia.”
”But… How is that possible? Aren’t they machines, not people?” I wondered out loud, several of them letting out chuckles. “If they’re Humans that have evolved… just how long was I in that bath?! What year is it now? Don’t lie to me, please.”
MegaMom X looked down, an uncomfortable look clearly seen on her perfect, smooth face. “…3306. It’s been one-thousand, two-hundred and fifty-three years. Records of your location were lost for about one-thousand of those years.”
What felt like the weight of the whole world suddenly came crashing back down on top of me, causing me to begin sobbing and crying as MegaMom X put another blanket around me and used a tissue to wipe my tears away. I had been locked in that awful place for over a thousand years, little more than a… factory to the powers-that-be. My piece of shit husband, especially. I wanted to be angry, but I didn’t have the energy to weep over the time I had lost forever.
“What happened to them? That human filth I called a ”husband” and my little boy?” I asked, trying to regain emotional control of myself. “I need to know, at least for the sake of closure. Did my boy avoid what he had planned for him?”
“I’m sorry, but… your former husband’s plans came to pass. Your son was converted into the very first MegaMom, whom we once believed to be our most common ancestor. I’m even one of her direct descendants, hence my name.” She answered, causing sadness to build up in me once again. “If it's any comfort to you, she’s well taken care of, along with many of the other original MegaMoms. Later generations came to revere them as pseudo-deities, in a sense. As for your former Husband, well… he met a rather gruesome “end” after being exposed to your very own conversion fluid. Though the records are incomplete, we now think it was an intentional incident, given the lines and people he crossed.
“Serves him right, I suppose. Playing with our lives the way he did…” I nodded, breathing in and sighing as I processed her words. Then, the thought hit me. “Wait, so you’re telling me my son is still around? He’s not dead?”
“All those who underwent the conversion process into MegaMoms became effectively immortal, yourself included. Cellular degeneration is impossible thanks to the regenerative qualities of your conversion fluid, and the cybernetic components of earlier MegaMoms, your ”son” included, prevents their systems from decaying.” She went on, getting my eyes to light up in hope. “However, your ”son” and his case are… complicated, to say the least, and may be harder to explain.”
“I spent all that time in the bath, waiting for the day I’d be able to live my life again. What’s a few more moments?” I spoke, crossing my arms as I allowed some sarcasm to peek through. “Please, just tell me everything you know.”
“Very well, though you may not like what I’m about to tell you.” She began, leaning in closer as my grandchildren in the room left to give us privacy. “When your… deplorable husband converted your son into the very first MegaMom, we believe he lied to him, telling him it would be a ”temporary” transformation. During the process itself, broadcast live to the world, he wiped your son’s mind of most memories, replacing them with ones tailored to the Repopulation Program.”
“That… utter bastard.” I quietly exclaimed, balling up both of my fists. “Have there been any attempts to reverse the changes done to my boy? Maybe… return him to his original state? You have all this technology, after all, right?”
“Unfortunately, the conversion process is permanent.” She answered, causing my emotions to build up yet again “As for the changes made to MegaMom’s mind that day, they’re hardwired into her brain. We can’t change that, even now.”
“Well, even if my boy will never be the same again, I still want to see them. Him, her, I don’t care what they call her, I want to live with my baby, like my… former husband promised all those years ago.” I said with determination, looking at her.
“I can’t guarantee it’ll be a happy experience for you, but I can arrange for you to live with her if that’s what you wish to do.” MegaMom X nodded, getting off the bed and standing straight. “Anything you need, just ask, Grand Mother.”
A few days later, I was taken to the small “city” of sorts where the MegaMoms of earlier generations lived in luxury, their original purpose having been fulfilled several hundred years ago. Those that retained their minds after their procedures were treated, as MegaMom X said, as pseudo-deities, myself now included. We were looked upon by the younger generations as eternal sources of knowledge and wisdom, basically a living memory of old humanity. Thanks to the “cooling unit” that had been installed on my back, I no longer needed to worry about overheating, but the massive mammaries I had gained from my own barbaric transformation were quite cumbersome, and took a lot of time to get used to. Thankfully, I didn’t have to worry about back pain, or any kind of pain or hardship for that matter. MegaMom X hadn’t lied when she told me I was revered. As the oldest common ancestor to evolved humanity, I accepted their new title for me. Eventually, I was led to the quarters of my son, the very first MegaMom, who seemed quite pleased to have visitors. Apparently, she could only be kept comfortable due to her aforementioned “programming” limiting her knowledge.
“It's, like, so nice to meet you, honey!~” She greeted in a cheery, bubbly tone, standing up from her rather large and expansive bed. She wore nothing but a sheer, silky white gown, the archaic implants on her body clearly seen. “I was told I was going to have another girl joining me here, and I couldn’t be happier! It’s been far too long since I’ve been involved in some… group activities. After all, we need to keep this party going if we’re going to repopulate the world!~”
Knowing what I knew, I didn’t bother trying to ask him… her if she knew who I was. Instead, I walked up to “MegaMom”, giving her a tight hug as tears began flowing from my eyes again. I was so close, yet still so far from my baby boy.
“I’ve missed you for so long. My baby…” I said, sobbing as I held her cybernetic form tightly against my body. I couldn’t hold back any of my emotions anymore. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to protect you from him. I’m sorry, I’m sorry…”
As ProtoMom, now the “Grand Mother”, squeezed the very first MegaMom tightly against herself, something unexpected began to happen. The sensation of the older woman’s skin against her own, the sound of her voice, and the contours of her face began to “unlock” part of MegaMom’s memories, ones once thought to be long gone, destroyed by her father. Though she struggled to understand them, she knew one thing for sure. She knew this woman, and trusted her.
“It’s OK, honey… you don’t have to be sad.” MegaMom reassured, accepting the gesture as her programming began to recede just slightly. Though not perfect, the two would eventually come to finally call each other Mother and Daughter.
